Generative Friction

What is the Generative Friction?

The Generative Friction is an editorial decision aid created by Gear Up to Grow. It organizes the evidence behind one practical problem into a repeatable sequence. It is a thinking and planning tool, not a validated diagnostic or treatment instrument.

Gear Up to Grow original insight

The right amount of friction is goal-dependent. For routine transformation, friction should be low and verification fast. For learning or high-stakes judgment, friction should force an independent attempt, source inspection, and later reconstruction before the output is accepted.

How to apply the Generative Friction

  1. Attempt before assistance: Produce a first answer, outline, model, calculation path, or list of uncertainties before opening the LLM.
  2. Ask for a bounded operation: Request one function such as counterexamples, error checking, alternative hypotheses, formatting, or a source search plan.
  3. Inspect claims and provenance: Identify factual claims, assumptions, citations, uncertainty, and missing perspectives. Verify load-bearing claims with primary or authoritative sources.
  4. Reconstruct without the answer: Close the generated response and explain the reasoning, reproduce the structure, or solve a parallel example from memory.
  5. Retrieve after a delay: Return later to one representative question or decision without the original prompt, then use the tool only after the attempt.

When to use it

Use it when: you use AI for learning or consequential judgment and want deliberate checkpoints that preserve your own thinking.

Avoid treating it as: applied to low-stakes routine transformation where added steps waste time without improving the outcome.

Claim review

Claim reviewed: Using an LLM automatically weakens critical thinking and working memory.

Rating: Not established. Research identifies associations and task-specific tradeoffs, not a universal causal effect; tool timing and the operations retained by the user are the central variables.

Where it comes from

The Generative Friction is introduced and used in detail in the guide “The AI Cognitive Offloading Protocol.” This page is a standalone reference for the framework itself; the parent guide explains the full protocol it belongs to.
